Lead Heads & Soft Baits

A must have in your tackle box, whether you're out on a reef of wreck, when the tide slackens rig one of these on a very short trace length (no more than 8-10 inches) off a boom and jig across the bottom. This is a killer method for big wreck cod...but if you aint got the lure, you aint got the fish.

The Hopper rig is a killer for fishing at slack water for wreck Cod and Ling. I've made up this rig using one of our up tide/down tide Uni booms. The hook length is 60lbs Surecatch shock leader line. I use this as it is soft yet springy, giving the lead head extra action, and thick enough so it stands out and does not tangle. The trace length is critical - between 8 and 12 inches, no longer. Jig this rig up and down, bouncing it on the sea bed. The lead weight sends out loads of noise as it bangs up and down, and stirs up clouds of sand and silt. The Cod and Ling move in as they are so inquisitive. The short trace that the lead head is attached to allows it to flutter up and down just at the edge of all this commotion, and this is what the fish see, BANG, the next minute your rod tips doubled over, as another fish falls to the superb Hopper rig.
